Shearwater Research Near Eye Remote Display NERD2 with Canbus Connector for O2ptima Rebreather
Shearwater Research Near Eye Remote Display NERD2 with Canbus Connector for O2ptima Rebreather
  • Technical dive computer with a "Heads Up Display"
  • Crucial data in your line-of-sight for the entire dive
  • Full color display w/ magnifying lens is easy-to-read
  • Air, Nitrox and Trimix mixed gas for OC or CCR
  • Feature rich with the latest diving technology

The Near Eye Remote Display dive computer from Shearwater Research of Canada incorporates a powerful feature set, easy to understand menus, easy to read full color display, and a special optics and mounting system that projects the equivalent of the Shearwater Petrel as a heads up display directly in the eye of the diver. The Shearwater NERD is the first technical dive computer with a display mounted on the diver's rebreather mouthpiece. This revolutionary device keeps crucial information in your line-of-sight for the entire dive. Thanks to the Micro LCD display and magnifying lens, the data appears as if displayed on a 32" TV screen 12' away, with no need to focus. If you can watch a TV without glasses, and even if you have a bifocal lens mask for reading gauges, you should have no problem seeing the NERD. The display is unobtrusive as it virtually disappears when you look straight ahead. The numbers are there when you need them at any point during the dive, and out of the way when you don't. The full color display is used to convey additional meaning with the information being displayed. When information is yellow or red, it calls the diver's attention to an unusual value or problem.

Available as a special offer, Shearwater will custom build the (NERD) Dive Computer w/ Canbus Connector for your JJ, O2ptima, or Prism2 rebreather

The NERD has been designed to accept any type of AA size battery including alkaline and rechargeables. Out of the box, the NERD includes Bluetooth wireless upload/download support, open-circuit and closed-circuit Air, Nitrox and Trimix mixed gas functionality with a Fischer 103 I/O port used for external PO2 monitoring of up to three oxygen sensors in a rebreather loop. For more answers to questions about the NERD read the NERD FAQ.

Currently Shearwater is marketing the NERD as a dive computer specifically intended for mounting on the DSV or BOV (bailout out valve) of a rebreather loop. This means that if you go completely off the loop (i.e. bailout to open-circuit using an off board OC second stage) then you would lose the near eye display. The issue for NERD open-circuit use becomes how do you mount it? You can't mount it on an OC second-stage, especially if you perform the gas switches common in OC technical dives. If you discover a mounting alternative to the loop, let us know about it.

Features of the NERD Dive Computer

The NERD is a full decompression dive computer incorporating the Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm, with user configurable Gradient Factors (GF). Gradient Factors allow the diver unique and individual control of their dive computer decompression calculations. The included CCR mode for rebreathers provides the ability to perform constant PO2 set point calculations for deco. An optional PIN upgrade to the Varying Permeability Model (VPM-B and VPM-B/GFS) decompression algorithm is available. During a decompression dive, the NERD provides complete information displays of all required stop times. The NERD can provide time-to-surface based on "look ahead" at planned gas switches. Multiple gas definition presets are supported with any combination of oxygen, nitrogen and helium. The NERD will NOT "lockout" after a missed stop or ascent rate violation.
