The O2ptima-SR Rebreather is a compact, electronics-driven, fully closed circuit constant PO2 design rebreather (eCCR). Designed by a collaboration of experts, the O2ptima combines the benefits of the Micropore cartridge-based CO2 scrubber, Dive Rite's regulators, SiTech valves, and now offers the Shearwater Research closed circuit mixed gas controller and decompression computer.

The O2ptima includes an ultra high performance DSV, low profile 2.5L counter lungs (3L are available as an option), and recently updated to incorporate the Shearwater electronics package incorporating CAN bus technology. For buoyancy control, the O2ptima includes the divers choice of the Dive Rite TransPac or TransPlate harness along with their CCR wing specifically designed for rebreathers.

To be ready to dive, the O2ptima rebreather diver needs only to add the supply cylinders and valves. The O2ptima accepts a very wide range of cylinder sizes from aluminum 13's (2L) to steel 27's (4L). Less the cylinders, the entire unit can be carry-on luggage for most airlines.

About the O2ptima

The scrubber canister is positioned horizontally behind the divers head. This position offers many benefits: decreased breathing loop length, lower breathing resistance, and improved buoyancy trim. The axial flow scrubber canister contains a water trap, provides simple and quick replacement of the CO2 absorbent and allows easy access to the four oxygen sensors. The dual over-the-shoulder counterlungs are independently shoulder/front-mounted and position adjustable to provide the most effective breathing configuration for your body.

Each lung is fitted with a swivel valve for manual addition of your gases and the valve accepts standard BC-type quick release hose fittings. The exhalation tee contains an additional water trap and the counterlung includes an OPV with spin-valve, providing for the easy the removal of any trapped water, even while underwater. Also included as standard is an Auto Diluent Valve (ADV) which automatically adds diluent into the breathing loop during descent as the gas in the loop compresses, and includes an inline shutoff valve. The low-maintenance mouthpiece, called the Dive/Surface Valve (DSV), is capable of one-handed open/close operation.

  The O2ptima low weight metal frame holds all the components securely in place, has a carry handle and stands upright for storage, as well as being streamlined to fit body contours, particularly on smaller individuals. The exceptionally durable fabric cover is a combination of Rhinotec and Cordura with reflective stripes to improve visibility in low light or silty conditions. The O2ptima cover allows for easy access to both the scrubber canister and gas supply cylinders. Quick release clips allow divers to open the top only or bottom only rather than having to remove the entire cover. Weight pockets, one on each side of the canister-portion of the cover, can handle { 5 lb | 2.7 kg } of weight.

The O2ptima is an adjustable { 22 to 25 in | 55.9 to 63.5 cm } high, { 13 in | 33 cm } wide, and { 8 in | 20.3 cm } deep and the weight (without cylinders and absorbent) is less than { 28 lb | 12.7 kg }. Although airline luggage restrictions vary widely, the O2ptima qualifies as "carry-on" with many airlines. A fully configured O2ptima, utilizing TransPac Harness and CCR Wing, with fully charged AL13 aluminum cylinders and the absorbent cartridge has a pre-dive weight of { 51 lb | 23.1 kg }; compared to a single aluminum 80 open circuit rig of { 42 lb | 19.1 kg } or a double aluminum 80 open-circuit rig of { 87 lb | 39.5 kg }.

Shearwater Petrel Electronics Package

The Petrel electronics package from Shearwater Research provides both a solenoid controller and handset, along with an electrically isolated and independently powered PO2 heads-up-display. The Petrel is completely OEM integrated with the O2ptima-SR rebreather and provides full real time decompression dive computer capabilities, including required stop obligations and time-to-surface calculation. Handset - The handset display, normally worn on the wrist, shows the measured PO2 for three oxygen sensors, dive time, actual and max depth, and decompression information. Decompression information includes required stop obligations and time-to-surface calculation.

Heads-Up-Display (HUD) - There are two options for the HUD. The LED HUD option allows you to monitor your loop PO2 via the heads-up display using color LEDs mounted on the DSV. The actual loop PO2 for each of three sensors is displayed via a flashing code. The NERD HUD option provides a special optics and O2ptima specific mounting system that projects the equivalent of the Shearwater Petrel as a heads up display directly in the eye of the diver.

Four Oxygen Sensors - The head contains a total of four oxygen sensors, numbered 1, 2, 3C and 3H. The handset and HUD each share sensors #1 and #2, but the handset and HUD use sensors #3C and #3H independently of each other. You can also order an optional factory installed external PO2 monitoring cable with Fischer 103 connector to transmit readings from sensors 1, 2 and 3H to an independent backup Shearwater Petrel-EXT dive computer.

Bühlmann ZH-L16 Deco Algorithm with Gradient Factors - Bühlmann-based algorithms are among the most widely used decompression models, and the ZH-L16 algorithm is programmed into   many of today's dive computers. The improvement of Gradient Factors allows the diver unique and individual control of their dive computer decompression calculations.

Full Nitrox/Trimix/Heliox Support - The dive computer supports any breathing mixture of Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Helium. As many as ten different gas mixes (5 open circuit and 5 closed circuit) can be pre-defined by the diver and selected at any time during a dive. The O2ptima includes full Trimix support as a standard feature.
