The durable Light Monkey Finger Spools are machined from solid Dupont Delrin® Polyoxymethylene (POM) and this heavier material yields a balanced neutral buoyancy with high strength. The mini-spool version is very small yet has enough line for most gaps and the compact size allows you to carry several. The Light Monkey Finger Regular and Large Spools have a larger diameter center hole (1.25 in | 3.2 cm} which make them easier to handle in warmer waters AND better suited to use with cold water drysuit gloves. All spools include a marine quality 316 stainless steel double-ender and #18 white cave line. Also available with an upgrade to Dive Gear Express exclusive custom-made Orange, Yellow or Ultra White Hi-Viz Dacron Line, or Glow-in-the-Dark.

The Dive Gear Express exclusive Hi-Viz Dacron Line is better than the generic nylon line commonly used in diving applications because it is high tenacity, braided DuPont Dacron®. Hi-Viz Dacron costs a bit more than generic nylon line, but this abrasion resistant line has slightly negative buoyancy, won't twist or kink, and has minimal stretch. Hi-Viz Dacron line is stronger than #36 nylon line, yet is slightly thinner than #24 nylon line and flat woven, so extra is able to be loaded on the reel. White nylon line is difficult to see in open water, but Hi-Viz Line stands out like neon, allowing easier line management with nearby divers. Available in orange, yellow or ultra white, choose Hi-Viz Dacron Orange for best distance visibility or Hi-Viz Dacron Yellow for best low-light visibility. The durable color of Hi-Viz Dacron line also remains vibrant over time, unlike the "wash-out" fading typical of ordinary dyed nylon cave line.
When is Enough... Enough?
The makers of dive reels and finger spools find themselves "between a rock and a hard place" as they say in cave country. Manufacturers know that for their guideline devices to work properly, the line should only fill about 80% of the spool. Like a cup of liquid filled to the very brim, invariably an overfilled device will spill line back on itself and cause a jam on deployment. Then upon line retrieval, the diver has no hope of reloading the line as perfectly as a machine winder did initially, which means the diver is left with a birdsnest.
So why do the manufacturers seem to often overload the spool? Because consumers, especially those new to using guideline devices, expect them be fully loaded to the brim and if they do not appear full the consumer may complain of being short changed or not purchase at all. The whole issue is compounded by the fact that most manufacturers don't use a line counter to load their reels, it's typically done by appearance not by measurement. Different workers will load line differently, but in general the tendency even in manufacturing is to overload the line plus packing too tight as a result of using machine winders. FYI, when you buy Dive Gear Express Hi-Viz line we use a line counter to produce a consistent load of the advertised length... but then even we load a little bit more; just to avoid consumer complaints about short loads. The fix is very simple; if you are having a problem with jams or birdsnests on any reel or finger spool then try removing some of the line.
