The EZ Solenoid Inline Shut-Off allows control of the oxygen supply to the rebreather diver dealing with ascents and troubleshooting.

This product is suitable for a front mounted counterlung only. It should not be used with a back mounted counterlung.

The Shut-Off is very easily accessible, located just above the oxygen manual addition valve on the front mounted counterlung. The device includes the special wide centers Y-block manifold with a slide operated valve alongside a BC male QD fitting, together with a BC female QD fitting at the base. Oxygen flows from the first stage to the device, which supplies both the manual addition valve and the slide valve, then from the slide valve to the solenoid. This solution also allows for easy connection of an off board oxygen source to supply both the solenoid and the manual addition. Keep in mind that the IP of an off board oxygen first stage still must match the IP of the on board first stage, typically about { 90 psi | 6 bar }.

To install, connect the base to the manual addition valve on the front mounted counterlung, then the female QD fitting on the oxygen supply manual addition hose is connected to the QD fitting on the device. The solenoid hose is removed from both the canister and the first stage. A port plug is installed in the vacant first stage LP port. The 3/8-inch male LP fitting end of the solenoid hose is connected to the female LP port on the slide valve. If desired, a separately ordered right angle or swivel LP adapter can be installed at the solenoid fitting on the canister to allow the solenoid hose to more cleanly route from the canister to the slide valve.

To operate, pull down on the slide valve to open the oxygen supply to the solenoid, or push up on the slide valve to close and shut-off the oxygen supply. The slide valve can also be reconfigured in the field to operate in the opposite manner: up to open, down to close.

The Oxygen Solenoid Shut-off Is a Mixed-Bag

Installing an oxygen solenoid shut-off gives the diver the ability to isolate the solenoid from the supply, and, depending on the design, to also plug in off-board oxygen. This can be very handy for diagnosing and managing failures of the manual addition valve and solenoid. In certain types of unavoidable yo-yo depth profile changes seen in cave diving it also allows the diver to prevent the solenoid from unnecessarily adding oxygen.

Unfortunately, isolators also increase the risk that the diver will inadvertently shut off the oxygen supply to the solenoid. If you add a shut-off, update your checklist to account for the presence of another valve. Also, because the slide valve is much easier to close than a normal handwheel operated valve, there is the possibility of something rubbing or brushing against the slide valve, causing it to close. If the diver does not notice the slide valve is closed, there is an increased risk for hypoxia if the diver is not properly monitoring their PO2. The risk of hypoxia is even more increased if the breathing loop includes an automatic diluent valve (ADV) that remains open while the oxygen solenoid shut-off is closed. Dive Gear Express does not recommend inline oxygen shut-offs for sport CCR diving.

Using the quick disconnects while in the water to switch between on-board and off-board oxygen supply to the solenoid may risk introducing contamination to the solenoid, which might cause a malfunction. The diver should close the slide valve, perform the switch, then operate the manual addition valve to clear the line as much as possible before opening the slide valve. Dive Gear Express recommends that in-water switching of oxygen supply using the quick disconnects only be performed as an emergency procedure.
