Replacing Air Cell Inflation Assembly Elbows

How to Turn an Elbow Elbow, Gasket, Flange

When removing and replacing an air cell elbow, it is important this task be done correctly; otherwise damage may result.

The most important thing to remember is to turn only the collar at the base of the hose elbow, and not the elbow itself. Turning the elbow results in loosening the flange that mates the elbow to the air cell bladder. Once loosened, this flange cannot be re-tightened, except with special tools. It is best to avoid any possibility of this happening by holding the elbow stationary, while turning only the collar.

When installing or re-installing the elbow, make certain the gasket is in place between the elbow and flange. As you tighten the collar, avoid cross threading the collar and flange. You will feel the elbow lock into one of eight different positions. If the elbow assumes the wrong position, loosen the collar, re-orient the elbow and begin again.

After hand tightening the collar as far as it will go, fully inflate the air cell and check for leaks. The air cell should be able to remain fully inflated for several minutes without exhibiting any substantial air loss.
