Handwheel Nut Tool for Scuba Valves

If you need to remove or replace scuba valve handwheels (aka knobs) you will need the handwheel nut tool, which works on nearly all brands of scuba valves and handwheels. The handwheel nut, which screws on to the valve stem and retains the spring against the handwheel, requires a special slotted flat blade to remove or replace the nut. This low cost device, from the same people who make the popular Vindicator scuba valve handwheel, is a single purpose tool. We also offer two multi-purpose devices which include a slotted flat blade tool as well, see our All-In-One Valve Repair Tool or our Scuba Multi-Tool.

To use, close the valve and while holding the handwheel to keep it from spinning insert the blade into end of the valve handwheel and on to the matching slots of the spring retaining nut. While pushing in slightly, use the tool to unscrew the nut from the stem to free the spring and handwheel. To reassemble, push the handwheel on to the valve stem, then insert the spring followed by the nut in to the end of the handwheel. While pushing the nut firmly against the stem, capturing the spring, screw in the nut. Screw the nut in until the end of the stem is flush with the top of the nut. The stem should not protrude past the top of the nut or the spring will be too compressed and the handwheel will be difficult to operate. A small amount of 'play' in the handwheel is normal, as this improves its impact resistance.

Inflator Service Tool w/O-Ring Kit

This stainless steel Inflator Service Tool from DSS has three openings that allow easy disassembly of the most widely used power inflator found on Dive Rite, Hollis, Halcyon, OMS, OxyCheq and many other brands. With our tool we also include a complete set of replacement Viton O-rings for the inflator.

  • 1/2" hex wrench for the low pressure quick release nipple
  • Special spanner with two bent tangs which fit the slots in the inlet valve cartridge assembly and facilitates its easy removal
  • 1/4" hex to keep the end of the valve spool in place while removing the plastic button from the cartridge valve assembly
  • Includes the five Viton O-rings found in the inflator: 112-V90B, 012-V90B, 011-V90B, and two 006-V75B.

How to Overhaul a Power Inflator

Removing Quick Release Nipple Removing Cartridge Valve Assembly QR Nipple and Cartridge Valve Assembly Removed Disassembling Cartridge Valve Inflator Completely Disassembled

If the base of the inflator QD fitting is leaking, use the 1/2" hex to remove the fitting and replace the o-ring. However, look closely if you see a leak. Sometimes the leak is not coming from the base of the fitting, but rather from the connection to the hose. There is a small o-ring in the female end of the hose fitting that is more frequently the source of the leak.

If the inflator is dribbling gas into the BC, you will have to completely overhaul the inflator. Start by mating the spanner tangs to the two slots of the inlet valve cartridge assembly, then unscrew counter clockwise until the entire assembly can be removed.

Now disassemble the cartridge assembly. Use the 1/4" hex to keep the end of the spool from turning while you unscrew the plastic button. Once the button separates from the spool, push the spool out from cartridge barrel. Remove all the o-rings (noting their relative positions and sizes) and clean everything, including the inside of the barrel and the plastic body of the inflator, by soaking in white vinegar and water. If need be, scrub with a light application of a toothbrush.

Replace the o-rings and reassemble. The o-rings must be clean and need not be lubricated. Some people lubricate the small 006 o-rings to provide a smoother operating feel, but we observe they are not lubricated at the factory in new inflators. (We do not lubricate because we think it attracts dirt and just gums up the works so that it has to be more frequently cleaned.) Tighten until snug, but do not over tighten or you will crack the plastic body. If the inflator still leaks or begins to leak within a few dives, then the surfaces which the o-rings seal against are worn and the entire inflator assembly should be replaced.

A few words of caution: This service kit is a great save-a-dive solution but our recommendation is to replace, not service, your power inflator if it develops any problems. The power inflator is not generally considered to be a 'user servicable' device. Improper service could cause a failure of buoyancy control, which has serious and life threatening consequences.
