Hollis 125lb Lift Bag

The Hollis Gear classic open bottom lift bags are a versatile light-to-medium-duty lifting tool. Popular with sport divers, these true lift bags are suitable for most types of underwater lifting and light salvage. Both the 60lb and 125lb versions have manual pull dump valves, are open at the bottom to vent expanding air as they ascend and include a stainless D-ring for line attachment. They are economical, lightweight, and fold into a neat, compact roll for easy handling. Available in safety orange color.

DR 50lb Lift Bag - Stowed

Salvage divers or anyone who needs to recover a heavy underwater object will appreciate the heavy-duty design of these professional quality lift bags. As true lift bags, they contain an internal dump valve with pull cord at the base that is used by the diver ascending with the bag to control ascent rate. The open design of both the 50-pound and 100-pound lift bags means air will vent out the bottom in case of a rapid ascent. Available in safety orange color, the Dive Rite lift bags include a built-in mesh carrying sleeve and have a handle at the top with reflective tape on both sides.

DR 100lb Lift Bag The Dive Rite 100-pound High-Lift Bag is 28-inches tall by 28-inches wide at it's widest point. Its trapezoidal shape means more air at the top, creating a shorter, lower profile bag that is ideal for inflation inside tight spaces. Intended for lifting heavy objects, the Dive Rite High-Lift Bag contains an internal dump valve near the top of the bag with pull cord at the base that is used by the diver ascending with the bag to control ascent rate. The Dive Rite 50-pound Lift Bag is a rectangular shape that is 28-inches tall by 18-inches wide.

How to Choose Between Lift and Marking Bags

Divers are sometimes confused about the difference between lift bags and marking bags. Our factual but easy-to-read article helps you choose the appropriate bag by giving you information on:

  • Why is one better at carrying a load to the surface
  • Why is one a better surface marker
  • Which has a dump valve that can be regulated on ascent
  • Which has an over-pressure relief valve that cannot be regulated on ascent

Surface Marking Tube Size Compariso If you are really serious about being seen at a distance, then nothing is going to work better than the Highland Giant Surface Marker Buoy. This is BIG, 10 feet tall and 22-inches in circumference. It's large enough to greatly enhance diver visibility, yet compact enough to carry easily. There are three large bands of U.S Coast Guard approved 3M SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) reflective tape to enhance surface visibility in marine environments. The marker includes a stainless steel D-ring at the top to attache a strobe and also has an elastic loop to hold a chemical light stick. A hybrid design, it includes both a baffled bottom for anti-spill power inflation at depth and an oral inflator for surface deployment. The hybrid marking tube includes an over pressure Surface Marking Tube Oral Inflator valve to allow excess gas to vent during ascent and/or to deflate the bag before boarding the boat. Available in ANSI safety orange or fluorescent yellow color, each marking tube also includes a special wider 6.5-inch X 14-inch all-mesh carry sleeve for backplate attachment. Although the marking tube should NOT be used as a lift bag, for emergency purposes a full tube may be considered to have approximately 75 lbs of lift.

Yellow Surface Marking Tube When surface visibility from a distance is important, such as when the diver is hanging under a bag during deco, many divers choose the Dive Rite Surface Marking Tube. Similar in operation to a lift bag, but tube-shaped, the Surface Marking Tube is approximately 60-inches (5 feet) tall by 8-inches wide (when flat) with an over pressure relief valve (OPV) and has reflective tape at the top end. The Dive Rite Surface Marking Tube is a hybrid that can be used two different ways:

  • The hybrid marking tube is open at the bottom as with the lift bag and incorporates an ingenious funnel-shaped internal baffle that allows the tube to be inflated as usual with a regulator second stage at depth, but prevents the tube from unintentionally deflating should it fall over while on the surface.

  • The hybrid marking tube also has an oral/power inflator that allows the tube to be inflated at the surface (like a "safety sausage") or at depth. Perfect for rebreather divers, using the oral/power inflator with the low pressure hose on a bailout bottle makes inflation manageable without the use of diluent gas.
Surface Marking Tube - Stowed

The hybrid marking tube includes an over pressure valve to allow excess gas to vent during ascent and/or to deflate the bag before boarding the boat. Available in ANSI safety orange or fluorescent yellow color, each marking tube also includes its own built-in carrying sleeve. Although the marking tube should NOT be used as a lift bag, for emergency purposes a full tube may be considered to have approximately 30 lbs of lift.

A usage note... the hybrid marking bag is not fully closed by design and if you inflate it when dry (i.e. at home, to 'test' it), you will discover gas slowly leaks out through the bottom baffle. This does not cause a problem in actual in-water use, where the water will cause the baffle to seal.

Dive Rite SeeMe - Yellow The new SeeMe Float from Dive Rite is a compact version of their Surface Marking Tube, and is often referred to as a "safety sausage." For drift dives, or night dives, or in the event that you're separated from the boat and need to be easily spotted, this device is a must-have accessory for every open ocean diver. Fully closed, the SeeMe fits easily in a pocket or can be secured to a harness D-ring with the attached plastic clip. The 44-inch (112cm) long by 4-inch (10cm) wide tube is easy to inflate with the oral inflation valve. For extra visibility, at the top of the tube is a clear plastic holder for a chemical glow stick. The SeeMe Float is available in orange and yellow.

DR Mesh-Front Lift Bag Sleeve Only

Cylinder Mounted Lift Bag Sleeve The Dive Rite Lift Bag Sleeve gives divers the option to wear the bag on a harness, backplate, or, as shown in the picture at the right, a deco bottle. Made with abrasion and tear resistant dernier ballistic nylon, the front is mesh while the back is fabric. The Lift Bag Sleeve holds even Dive Rite's largest bag and can be deployed with one hand, even with gloves.

Lift Bag Sleeve - Bac The Dive Rite version is unique in that it includes nylon webbing stitched on the back of the sleeve for fitting to a stage bottle with either a standard 2-inch cam strap or metal clamps. (Lift bag for illustrative purposes only, not included.)

Attachment hardwareUsing the metal grommets, either the DR or the XS sleeve can easily be attached to the bottom or sides of any standard metal backplate using assembly screws or attached to the Transpac using medium quick links. We find that for this application, the plastic assembly screws work just as well as the stainless steel versions and cost a lot less. You can also use ordinary cable ties, but in our experience cable ties don't hold so you'll need to double up.

What Color is Your  Parachute  Bag?

Studies done in the transportation sector prove the best color for high visibility worker clothing is fluorescent safety orange because that color is the most visible from the greatest distance. A fluorescent yellow-green color, while not as visible at distance, offers better night visibility and is also a better choice for signage because it provides more contrast for lettering.

Recently some groups of divers have informally assigned meaning to bag color. Shooting an orange bag or marker is supposed to indicate a normal situation to surface support. The appearance of a yellow color may mean that the diver has an abnormal situation and requires assistance from the surface. However, there is absolutely no color standard along with considerable confusion about color, and we've even seen bags that were yellow on one side and orange on the other.

Our recommendations: If visibility is most important, then orange is proven by far to be the best color choice for distance visibility during daylight hours. Choose yellow for night visibility, or if you intend to use it for some form of signaling or identification. We respectfully suggest reconsidering any dive plan which depends on the color of the bag to signal for help.
