Finger Spools

Pricelist

In the early days of cave diving, guideline reels were not available for purchase and divers made their own using anything they could find. Cave diving pioneer Woody Jasper used a medical tape spool with cover to hold a short length of line for use as a gap reel. North Florida cave diver Bill Hogarth Main popularized using smaller electrical wire spools for safety and jump reels. Today, purpose built finger spools are more ergonomically designed and constructed from more durable materials than the original homemade solutions. The holes in the side allow for clipping a double ended snap anywhere along the perimeter of the finger spool to keep the line tight when not in use. Small and low-profile, a finger spool fits nicely out of the way in a pocket or clipped off to a D-ring. The larger finger spools are also an alternative to reels for shooting lift bags and surface marking tubes.

> Large and Small Finger Spools

Small enough to stow in an accessory pocket, these "no-frills" spools can substitute for jump/gap reels and safety reels. The large finger spool is a good choice for open-water divers who seek a very low-profile reel for use with marking/lift bags. These injection molded polycarbonate one piece finger spools include a marine-grade double eye stainless steel bolt snap and either 125 feet or 50 feet of standard #24 cave line in white or orange. Also available as a Dive Gear Express exclusive with our custom-made Hi-Viz Dacron Line in choice of Hi-Viz Dacron Orange or Hi-Viz Dacron Yellow.

Size #24 Line Hi-Viz Line Diameter Width Center Hole
Small 50' 80' 3.00" 1.50" 1.00"
Large 125' 150' 3.50" 1.75" 1.38"

The Dive Gear Express exclusive Hi-Viz Dacron Line is better than the generic nylon line commonly used in diving applications because it is high tenacity braided DuPont Dacron®. Hi-Viz Dacron costs a bit more than generic nylon line, but this abrasion resistant line has slightly negative bouyancy, won't twist or kink and has minimal stretch. Our Hi-Viz Dacron line is stronger than #36 nylon line, yet is slightly thinner than #24 nylon line, so you can load extra on the reel. White line is difficult to see in open water, but our Hi-Viz Line stands out like neon, allowing easier line management with nearby divers. Available in both orange and yellow colors, choose Hi-Viz Dacron Orange for best distance visibility or Hi-Viz Dacron Yellow for best low-light visibility.

> Stainless Finger Spools

Stainless and Plastic Spools Forming finger spools from stainless steel offers durability, of course, but also allows greater freedom in design that yields the most compact form factor possible for a given amount of line. Compare the 50 foot plastic spool with the 100 foot stainless spool and you will see they are almost the same size. Stainless doubles the capacity with a thinner profile, larger center hole and more perimeter holes closer to the edge.

These skillfully constructed stainless steel finger spools are made from 16 gauge 304L stainless steel sheet that is waterjet cut and formed with a 100 ton press to make spool halves then TIG welded together, polished and passivated for a long corrosion free life. The generous sized center hole features an ergonomic shape for easy handling even with thick gloves. They all include a marine quality stainless steel double ended bolt snap and are loaded with our exclusive Hi-Viz Dacron line.

100, 150 and 200 Foot Stainless Spools The spools themselves are all 3.3-inches in diameter and the 100 foot spool is 1.15-inches wide. To make the 150 and 200 foot spools, a stainless tube is TIG welded between the halves to increase the width to 1.75-inches and 2.25-inches respectively. The stainless spools weigh 3.5 oz. for small, 3.9 oz. for medium, and 4.1 oz. for large. Both plastic and stainless are low weight but the typical 2.0 oz. plastic spool is almost too light and the stainless has a better feel in your hand.

Finger Spools Are Not Guideline Reels

The skills required to deploy a finger spool are different than those required to use a typical guideline reel. At first glance the simple spool looks easier, but compared to guideline reels the finger spool requires specific techniques for successful use. If this is your first finger spool then seek advice, get a demonstration, and most importantly you should practice under controlled conditions.

A common usage mistake is rewinding a finger spool in a manner that applies a lot of tension to the line, such as when hanging under a lift bag, causing the line to be very tightly wound on to the spool. Upon re-use the line doesn't smoothly unwind and sticks, causing the entire spool to be jerked out of the fingers or disappear with the lift bag.
