A Trend in Regulator ConfigurationThe traditionally configured sport diver uses an 'octopus' regulator setup. Over time, many experienced divers have come to believe this configuration has significant problems. Key issues are that the second stage, on a 40-inch hose, is annoying to reliably stow, causes unnecessary drag, is difficult and time consuming to deploy, and the hose is too short in a genuine emergency. Further, it's not unusual for the octopus to be clogged with silt or sand if not stowed carefully. All technical divers and many experienced sport divers now use a longer hose (60 or 84 inches) for their primary regulator, and put the compact backup regulator on a short 22-inch hose hung on a necklace directly below their chin. In an emergency the primary regulator is donated with one hand while the backup regulator is instantly available as a replacement using the other hand. With a bit of practice, some divers have even perfected a skill that allows them to retrieve the backup regulator without using their hands at all! |

Regulator Intermediate Pressure on RebreathersThe intermediate pressure of the Oxygen regulator on rebreathers is critical to their proper operation. Even slightly out-of-range values will shorten battery life on eCCR's due to the excess energy required to open the solenoid. Significantly high values will cause the solenoid to fail closed or manual valves to dibble. Slightly out-of-range values typically indicate the need for a simple IP adjustment to compensate for wear. Significantly out-of-range values, particularly with "creep," often indicate a more serious impending high-pressure seat failure. Also, slow recovery time can indicate a clogged inlet filter. Caution: For regulators on rebreathers the correct IP setting may be different than the typical 140 psi of most open circuit regulators. For example, the oxygen IP for the O2ptima eCCR is 90 psi and for the Inspiration eCCR is 110 psi. |
