The Oxygen Solenoid Shut-off Is a Mixed-BagInstalling an oxygen solenoid shut-off gives the diver the ability to isolate the solenoid from the supply, and, depending on the design, to also plug in off-board oxygen. This can be very handy for diagnosing and managing failures of the manual addition valve and solenoid. In certain types of unavoidable yo-yo depth profile changes seen in cave diving it also allows the diver to prevent the solenoid from unnecessarily adding oxygen. Unfortunately, isolators also increase the risk that the diver will inadvertently shut off the oxygen supply to the solenoid. If you add a shut-off, update your checklist to account for the presence of another valve. Also, because the slide valve is much easier to close than a normal handwheel operated valve, there is the possibility of something rubbing or brushing against the slide valve, causing it to close. If the diver does not notice the slide valve has been accidentally closed, there is an increased risk for hypoxia if the diver is not properly monitoring their PO2. Dive Gear Express does not recommend inline oxygen shut-offs for sport CCR diving. Using the quick disconnects while in the water to switch between on-board and off-board oxygen supply to the solenoid may risk introducing contamination to the solenoid, which might cause a malfunction. The diver should close the slide valve, perform the switch, then operate the manual addition valve to clear the line as much as possible before opening the slide valve. Dive Gear Express recommends that in-water switching of oxygen supply using the quick disconnects only be performed as an emergency procedure. |
