Lithium Batteries for Rebreathers

Pricelist

Lithium cells are among the most dense energy storage chemistries in general use for primary batteries and offer the advantage of very long service life in most applications. The lithium energy discharge curve is also very flat, providing a consistently high voltage throughout the life of the battery. Compared with most other types of batteries, lithium batteries are lighter weight, have a wider operating temperature range (making them excellent for cold-water and ice diving), and have a much longer 10 year shelf life. The hermetically sealed construction of lithium cells means they are very unlikely to leak. Lithium cells are environmentally friendly, offering easy disposal since they do not contain heavy metals found in most batteries. Good news for travelers: All the lithium batteries we sell contain less than 2 grams of equivalent lithium content (ELC) and are not restricted by TSA.

> Energizer 6V CR-P2 Lithium Battery (EL223AP)

Recently Fujitsu has ceased manufacturing their CR-P2 battery and Ambient Pressure Diving now recommends the Energizer CR-P2 6V lithium cell for their Inspiration Package of 12 Energizer Lithium Batteries and Evolution rebreathers, and specifically recommends against some other brands. To see engineering specifications for the EL223AP battery click on the manual icon at left. We have made a large purchase of these batteries in bulk packaging in order to be able to offer a great price. The bulk package version does not look like the consumer version with the pretty blue blister pack card, but it is exactly the same battery for a whole lot less money. These come 12 to a box for the same price we used to sell the Fuji 10 pack.

Battery Service Life in Rebreathers

The most significant pulse current demands are the firing of the oxygen-injection solenoid and the illumination of the backlight. The diver physiology and skill with managing the rebreather, as well as the actual dive profile, significantly affect how often the solenoid fires. Dive conditions and individual diver preferences determine how often and how long the backlight is illuminated. The electronics also have a continuous current demand required to monitor wet sensors and switches. For whatever time the battery is in the rebreather, the electronics continues to drain the battery even when the unit is out of the water and shutdown. These factors, along with the enourmous differences in quality between brands of batteries, result in wide variation of operational battery life among rebreather divers.
