The Light Monkey LED 21W Dive Light is a bright durable canister dive light offering the tight focus beam with a lot of punch that is preferred for exploration diving. Powered with a Lithium-ion Polymer Rechargable Battery, the LED 21W light burns at 1100 lumens of brightness for 5 hours. The single OSRAM Opto Semiconductor 21W LED offers the advantage of very long 20,000 hour life and the 6° beam width is much tighter than multi-LED arrays. Technical divers prefer the tight beam design for signaling purposes.

The Light Monkey canister is made from a solid block of Delrin with two stainless-steel clamps and a nylon webbing belt loop. Locking latches are used to help prevent accidental opening of a latch under water. The battery is sealed into the canister with two female power connectors and provides power to the head through a pair of matching male connectors embedded in the lid. The system has a provision for closing the lid such that the contacts are electrically isolated for travel. The canister lid also contains the canister o-ring, environmentally sealed on/off switch, and boot. The switch is fully recessed into the lid, no switch guard is required. The dry lid is completely sealed providing protection from water intrusion due to a cut cord or switch boot. There are sealing glands that include strain relief at both ends of the power cord.

The Light Monkey LED 21W light uses a Lithium-ion Polymer (LiPo) rechargable battery that has a high energy density, very good cycle life and is environmentally friendly. In addition, LiPo batteries can be stored for several months without significantly losing charge. The included Universal LiPo Smart Charger automatically adjusts to 110/220V current and 50/60Hz frequency. A US power cord is included with other cords available. Charging time is approximately 1.5 hour per hour of burn time, for example a five hour burn requires 7.5 hours to recharge. The sealed Lithium-ion Polymer battery design contains less than 9 grams of equivalent lithium content (well below the TSA 25 gram ELC threshold) and, when stored in the electrically isolated lid position, does not have any TSA travel restrictions.

Care and Feeding of LiPo Batteries

Lithium-ion Polymer (LiPo) batteries have care recommendations that differ from other types of rechargable batteries. Completely discharging the battery will cause permanent damage, but always maintaining a LiPo battery in a fully charged condition will shorten its lifetime. For maximum storage life, LiPo batteries should be stored with a partial charge, and if storing for an extended period then sealed in a moisture proof container at about 40°F (i.e. your refrigerator, but NOT the freezer). You should only fully recharge the battery the day before diving. You can maximize the life of your batteries by observing best practices appropriate for the type when charging, discharging or simply storing the battery.
