Sea Buff Dive Mask Precleaner

In Stock

$3.95

Sea Buff Dive Mask Precleaner, 1.25 Ounce

Sea Buff™ Dive Mask Precleaner -- New diving masks must be cleaned to remove factory mould release and/or packaging residues before the first application of anti-fog products. Otherwise, the residue will substantially reduce the effectiveness of any anti-fog solution that may be applied to the lens. New masks will need to be cleaned before each dive, as factory residues continue to migrate from the mask skirt onto the lens. Older masks should be cleaned periodically to remove residues accumulated from dives. Safe and very effective for use on ordinary tempered glass lenses, but do not use on plastic vision correcting or optically coated lenses.

Also restores slates and underwater notebooks to like-new condition. Special formula will not scratch or leave residue build-up on slates.

Toothpaste is for Teeth

Don't use toothpaste on modern dive masks, especially those masks that have vision correction lenses or 'optical coatings' on the lenses. You will either damage the lenses, or needlessly waste toothpaste since most modern toothpaste formulations are not at all abrasive. All new dive masks do have mould release agents in the flexible skirt that during long storage will migrate to the surface of the lense and cause fogging. These deposits can easily be removed with SeaBuff or an extra application of a powerful surfactant like SeaQuick defog or Johnson's® Baby Shampoo, but please don't use abrasives.

Mask Defoggers Explained

Regardless of the brand or type of defog there are basically only two ways to defog your mask, either coat the lens with an inhibitor (gels like SeaGold, and of course 'spit') or make the lens very clean so fog doesn't form (surfactants like SeaQuick and baby shampoo). Both approaches work equally well but require different application methods so it's mostly a matter of personal preference.

  • With the gel, apply a thin even coating to the inside of the mask lens (more is not better) and lightly rinse to smooth out the coating. Do NOT completely rinse or rub away the gel, remember you want a light coating of the gel on the lens.
  • A cleaning spray is the most popular approach because it's quick and easy. Generously spray the inside of the mask lens, rub and rinse completely to remove. If the lens is not 'squeeky clean' then repeat and perhaps rub a bit harder.
  • The drops are a concentrated version of the spray type cleaners. If you like the concentrated drop cleaners save yourself some money and just buy a travel size of Johnsons 'No More Tears' Baby Shampoo®.

Every once in a while it doesn't hurt to also clean the outside of the mask lens. It won't help to prevent fogging but you'll see better if the lens is clean on both sides! By the way, we are not big fans of the 'mask bucket' found on many dive boats. When everyone is rinsing their masks in the same bucket, they are sharing their bacteria and viruses with everyone else. We avoid that by rinsing our masks in seawater (works fine), fresh water from the shower hose if there is one, or even bottled water as a last resort.

UV Tech Protectant

UV Tech Protectant, 8 Ounce Pump Spray

UV Tech™ Surface Protectant and Rejuvenator -- maintains the integrity, suppleness, and elasticity of the latex, rubber and neoprene in drysuits. UV Tech contains a powerful UV-blocking agent that protects the drysuit neck and wrist seals and a re-plasticizer that dramatically slows degradation of drysuit seals. UV Tech does not contain silicone, penetrates instantly, won't rinse off, and surfaces treated with UV Tech will not attract dirt. Depending on sun exposure, even a single coat of UV Tech can benefit your drysuit for an entire season. If an item is getting heavy UV exposure, we recommend using UV Tech once every 30 days for maximum protection. We also recommend applying UV Tech before long-term storage.

Zip Tech does not contain silicone or paraffin, does not break down the rubber or adhesive in the zipper skirt, and does not flake off or cause zipper jams. To use, apply Zip Tech sparingly only to the outer teeth of zipper. Distribute lubricant by closing and opening zipper carefully. Repeat process until zipper moves freely and then wipe away excess. To protect and prolong zipper life, apply periodically and prior to long-term storage.
